Live Black Light Painting at Bangkok Island for Galleries’ Nights Bangkok

This article is about a live black light painting performance: a giant cycloptic jellyfish brain sea monster oozing radioactive energy in fluorescent UV spray paint for Galleries’ Nights Bangkok at the Bangkok Island.

Galleries’ Nights Bangkok is something I look forward to every year. The same way kids look forward to unwrapping Christmas gifts, I get excited knowing the city will transform into one giant, interconnected art experience. Galleries, pop ups and artist studios link together through a fleet of tuk tuks that transport art lovers across Bangkok to explore art exhibitions, performances and creative happenings.

This year I had the pleasure of contributing my neon artistic powers to an event hosted by the Bangkok Island, a floating venue on the Chao Phraya River and one of the official venues recognised by the French Embassy and the wider Franco-Thai cultural programme. The boat and docking pier were transformed into Pirate Art Island, a fully immersive event filled with live performances, VR art installations and a huge riverside art market. It was the perfect setting for a glowing, trippy black light painting infused with my signature street art style.

A Black Light Graffiti Installation – Painting Live

For this pirate art themed event on a floating venue, I created a large scale UV-reactive mural on a custom-built 3m x 3m transparent canvas. Painting on plastic is not my usual choice, but the material gave me the freedom to design something that interacted with the surroundings. Unpainted sections acted as windows that revealed parts of the boat and river behind the artwork, giving the final piece a layered, multi-dimensional effect, the creature appeared to be floating mid-air, part hallucination, part hologram all sea monster.

I wanted to paint something relevant to the theme, and my final design was a giant one-eyed cyclops jellyfish sea monster, dripping in fluorescent colour and glowing eerily under black light that could have even the fiercest pirate shaking in their boots. Using Thai brand Hype UV reactive spray paint, the neon tones vibrated beautifully against the dark backdrop of the river and pirate décor.

Painting took place throughout the event, around five hours in total. The wind was predictably strong dockside, making the plastic canvas sway and flap, which worked perfectly for the effect I wanted. The pulsating movement of the plastic, combined with the shifting of the gangplank leading to the boat, enhanced the artwork by animating the black light creature, giving the effect of a living, breathing sea monster. When exposed to UV light the creature appeared almost alive, pulsating and dancing in sync with the DJs, live music and performances happening around the boat.

About the Night: Galleries’ Nights Bangkok at Pirate Art Island

The event was an official part of Galleries’ Nights Bangkok, a citywide celebration organised with support from the French Embassy and Sawasdee France. Art lovers travelled between venues using free electric tuk tuks, exploring exhibitions across the Silom, Sathorn and Riverside routes before arriving at our floating pirate themed playground powered by international and underground artists.

The Bangkok Island featured an eclectic mix of artists and performers:

  • Various live art performances
  • Shibari and aerial performance
  • Experimental musicians and DJs
  • Spoken word and poetry
  • Interactive / Immersive VR installations
  • A huge art market with over 30 creative vendors surrounding the pier.

The combination of eclectic artistic happenings, river views, pirate energy and live performances created a surreal buzzing atmosphere that perfectly suited a UV-reactive graffiti sea creature glowing and pulsating in the night.
