The Taipei Fire Horse: Black light Graffiti Mural in Ximending, Taipei
UV-reactive street art transforms when the sun goes down. My latest art project took me to Taiwan to create a massive black light graffiti mural. Located in the heart of Ximen District at Taipei Cinema Park, this piece pushes the boundaries of neon street art. It is a dual-state artwork, designed to look radically different in daylight before bursting into life under ultraviolet black light. By combining traditional graffiti techniques with UV-reactive fluorescent paint, the mural lives a double life, offering visitors a completely different experience depending on the time of day and lighting conditions.
The Concept: Celebrating the Year of the Fire Horse
The core inspiration for this mural is the Year of the Fire Horse. In the zodiac, the Fire Horse appears only once every 60 years. It represents untamed energy, courage, and bold transformation. I wanted to capture that dynamic momentum using vibrant fluorescent colours. The horse leaps across the wall, symbolising a powerful charge into fresh starts and new creative eras. The animated line work and explosive colour palette reflect the chaotic but beautiful nature of the Fire Horse element, and what better way to represent bold burning fire? Why, black light spray paint, naturally!
Location: Painting in Taipei Cinema Park
Taipei has a modest but present urban art scene mostly thanks to the likes of Jimmy at City Marx and indeed graffiti supply stores such as Molotow and Mess-age. Ximen District, specifically Taipei Cinema Park, is a legendary hub for graffiti writers and street artists. Painting here provides a massive, high-visibility canvas. But it’s not a free for all, the walls are carefully curated by Jimmy from City Marx who has featured street artists from all over the world. I felt very fortunate to become one of the featured artists, especially during such an important occasion.
The energy of Ximending, with its neon lights, youth culture, and constant movement served as the perfect inspirational backdrop for a UV reactive mural that comes alive at night. Securing a wall in such a prestigious graffiti park allows the artwork to be experienced by thousands of locals and tourists daily. I am very thankful for the feature.
The Process: Painting a UV-reactive Black Light Graffiti Mural
Creating black light graffiti requires a highly specific technical approach. Creating UV-reactive artwork is like painting two murals simultaneously. I used standard colour aerosols for the base layers and specialised UV-reactive fluorescent paints for the highlights. Constantly switching between daylight visibility and ultraviolet torches is mandatory. This ensures the neon pigments pop correctly and the colour balance remains harmonious in both lighting conditions. The opacity of fluorescent paint can be unforgiving, demanding meticulous layering to achieve the intense luminescence required for a large outdoor wall. I really had to apply speed and the power of not just spray can pressure to get this done, but it’s a mission I gladly took on!
Day vs Night: The Dual Reality of Black Light Art
The true magic of this mural is the day-to-night morph. During the day, the Fire Horse is a striking, colourful piece of contemporary street art. However, when the UV lights activate after dark, a hidden matrix of glowing fluorescent colours emerges. The neon paints absorb and reflect the ultraviolet light, completely altering the composition and depth of the mural. The background elements recede, whilst the Fire Horse itself appears to burn with an ethereal, neon fire.
The Equipment and Tools of the Trade
Executing a UV mural demands specialised gear. Beyond premium aerosols, high-powered, industrial UV black light floodlights are critical. Different UV wavelengths create noticeably different effects. For this mural I used both 365nm and 395nm lighting because certain fluorescent colours respond better depending on the look I wanted to achieve.
I also utilised custom fat caps for the glowing flares and ultra-skinny caps for the intricate, luminous details that make the mane and typography glow fiercely. Actually, it was my first time writing in Chinese, and I found the typography lends itself well to a mural translation, but every single accent and detail is important to retain the meaning of the phrase. One small mistake can make the phrase incorrect as I found out the hard way when I was around 70% done and was aided by a kind passer-by (thank you kind lady – you saved my face)

How long does a UV graffiti mural last?
The lifespan depends on the paint brand, surface preparation, and how exposed the mural is to sunlight and the elements. Using premium paints, a quality primer, and a suitable protective coating, a UV mural can remain vibrant can remain vibrant for decades under the right conditions.
What paint do you use?
For this project I used Molotow spray paint, including their UV-reactive fluorescent range. I’ve worked with many brands over the years and always choose materials based on the surface, environment, and the final look I’m trying to achieve.
Does black light paint glow in daylight?
Not exactly. UV-reactive paint doesn’t “glow in the dark” by itself. In daylight it appears as an intensely bright fluorescent colour, but under ultraviolet (black light) it becomes dramatically more vibrant, creating an entirely different visual experience.

Can UV murals be painted indoors?
Absolutely. Indoor murals are often ideal because they are protected from the weather and UV lighting can be fully controlled. Good ventilation is essential during painting, but once complete the mural is perfectly suited for homes, businesses, entertainment venues, escape rooms, bars, clubs, and event spaces.
If painting on-site isn’t practical, I can also create the artwork on canvas or produce large-format UV-reactive printed installations that can be shipped worldwide.
